DC-9 HISTORY
When the DC-9 program launched on April 8, 1963,
The Douglas Aircraft Company essentially "Bet the
Company" on the success of the DC-9. At the time
of launch, they had no firm commitments or orders.
The DC-9 was devolved for a market that Douglas had
seen the need for: a short-range jet capable of making
multiple stops without refueling and with much lower
operations cost than the piston powered aircraft currently
serving the market.
The Douglas DC-9 was designed to operate efficiently,
reliably and economically over short-range airline segments
from 50 to 1,000 miles in length.
